UT-3000

Post by weezer »

From reading all the info on your website, it appears that you are saying that a bypass damper is not needed on a 2 or 3 zone system using HVAC equipment utilizing Climate Talk protocol,i.e Amana Comfortnet systems. Is this correct and if not, what bypass damper do you recommend.

We are not saying that a bypass damper is not needed on a Climate Talk Zone system, just that it's need is reduced.
This is due to the fact that the Zone Panel will control the fan speed output directly based on how many zones are calling.
Even in the perfect situation there are still several situations that can occur that would require you to have a bypass damper.
For example; If you have one small zone calling by itself on a heat pump system and the heat pump goes into a defrost cycle,
the heat pump will demand that the fan speed up in order to move the proper amount of air so that the equipment does not get damaged.
If you have only one zone calling while this occurs you could have severe noise issues without a bypass damper.
As far as sizing the bypass damper, that should be done in the conventional way.
Subtract the smallest zone CFM from the the total CFM of the System.
Size your bypass damper for the difference of the two.

Thanks for the reply. This is what I suspected. Just wanted to make sure I got the design correct the first time. One additional question for you. If I don't use Comfort net tsats, will I reduce the performance of the euipment as it was desaigned?

No you will still have a proportional control to your communicating HVAC equipment from the UT-3000 zone panel.
You will lose some features of communication between the equipment and the thermostat.
These features include CFM values, run time, fault codes, etc.
Also, the thermostat will not be able to give the system a percentage demand based on the set temperature vs. the room temperature.
The signal will simply be Heat on or Heat off. Cool on or Cool off.
My board however will send the appropriate proportional demand signal to your equipment so you will still get the benefit of a communicating system.
