Two simple questions:
1 - Can the URD-8 be placed in any orientation i.e. vertical?
2- Is there a way to manually open the damper without damaging the motor (not connected yet)

Dave,
The URD-8 can be placed in the vertical or horizontal position.
You can manually open the damper by pressing and holding the manual gear release button while you move the "U" shaped clamp that attaches the motor to the damper.
To leave the damper in the open position you would want to move that clamp counter clockwise.
I will attach a PDF depicting the parts of the motor I am referring to.
