I currently have a ST-2E with 2 zones & 2 thermostats. I have a propane fired hot air furnace and a single central air unit. I would like to upgrade my thermostats to smart units which, as I understand it, will require a controller update from ST-2E to NCM-3z.
What should I be comcerned about on the zone dampers and HVAC system side for compatibility? My furnace is only 4 years old but the rest of the system is about 23 years old.

As a follow-up I completed my upgrade from ST-2D to the NCM-3Z control board. The swap over was relatively easy and as described in this post.

I’d mainly verify that the existing zone dampers and their actuators are compatible with the NCM-3z, and that the furnace/AC control wiring and transformer can handle the new controller and smart thermostats before making the swap.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m considering a similar upgrade, so the point about checking the damper actuators and existing wiring is really helpful. I’d definitely want to confirm compatibility before replacing the controller.age of war

I would not assume the dampers need to be replaced just because you are changing the zone controller. I would first identify exactly what damper motors you have and how they are wired. If they are standard 24 volt zone dampers there is a good chance they can stay, but I would confirm that against the NCM 3z documentation before buying anything.
I would also check the transformer capacity. Two dampers, the new panel and smart thermostats can put a different load on the 24 volt side than the old setup, especially if the thermostats need a C wire. A system can look fine until one extra load pushes it past what the transformer can comfortably supply. I think about online platforms the same way. With Tropical Casino https://tropical-casino.com/ several live games, account updates and payment checks running at once can expose weak spots that never show up during simple browsing. Before changing anything else, I’d confirm the VA rating and total demand.
The other thing I would want checked on a system that old is airflow. Make sure the bypass setup, static pressure and damper positions are still appropriate when only one zone is calling. A new controller will not fix an airflow problem that has been hiding in the old system.
The four year old furnace itself would not worry me much. I would be more interested in the existing damper actuators, thermostat wiring and the condition of the older AC equipment. If all of that checks out, this seems more like a controls upgrade than a complete zoning replacement.
