Help with sizing a damper to replace current one

Post by yellowboy »

I have a rectangular EWC ND damper that has a malfunctioning MA ND round motor on it. It has stuck 3 times in the last 6 months. I wanted to replace it but when I called EWC I was told that that motor is no longer made and could use a MA-ND5 with an adaptor kit.

I got a new MA-ND5 (MRK) motor and adaptor kit, but it will not fit the damper because the location of current damper blade shaft prevents me from mounting the new motor (even when I rotate it 180 degrees).

I called EWC back, got another rep. and he tells me the new motor will not fit this damper, they do not make one that will and I have to replace the damper.

How do I know what size damper to order with out tearing the old one out first causing allot of down time ? It is covered on 3 sides with insulation board and tape.

I assume once I can measure it EWC can tell me which one I need to fit the new motor ?

There are no visible numbers on it. It looks to be about 15 X 17 X 6 inches in size. It is mounted horizontally. It is covered with insulation board and tape so that I can't really see it.

The current motor is mounted in the second hole from the right and that location makes mounting the bracket interfere with the right side of the duct board. Can the damper shaft be relocated to a more central hole ?

I am a homeowner not a contractor so not real familiar with this stuff.
Maybe someone knows where I can can an old MA-ND motor ?

The MA-ND is not actually not a part number for any of our older round motors. Depending on the size of your original damper determines if you can or can not use the MRK with the mounting bracket as a replacement. To get your damper size you would have to remove it completely from the duct to measure it.

Erik, I originally spoke to you on this.

The old round motor says MA-ND with no other number on the end panel.

What would be different about a new damper compared to the old ?

I am looking similar dampers being sold on E bay to mine (right now) that have a similar motor to the new one I have installed but it's hard to see exactly how they are bolted to the damper.

Also, there are two black rubber feet that prevent the motor from fitting in the bracket - can these be removed so I cac give it a try and how do they come out ?

I would like to try to fit this before I rip the damper apart. Thanks

Can you please send me a picture of the old motor at ewnoroski@ewccontrols.com or post it here. I believe i know what motor you currently have but I want to be sure we are on the same page.

OK will do. I did send some photos some time ago to another one of your folks and he told me I would have to get a new damper but I'd like your opinion as well.
