Recent install of 2nd damper in same zone

Post by jim_scanlon »

I have the following zone system configuration:

1. EWC UZC4 (up to 4 zones) only have 2 zones.
2. Zone 1 is for first floor - and has Aprilaire damper - 2 wire connected to zone 1 panel M1 M6 connection.
3. Zone 2 is for second floor and has 2 dampers on each heat duct.
* Duct 1 has Aprilaire damper - 2 wire connected to zone 2 M1 and and M6
* NEW install Duct 2 has EWC ND damper - 3 wire connected to M1, M4, M6 to zone 2. Duct 1 M1 and M6 Connected together, and M4 installed by itself.

Questions;

1. I noticed that when both thermostats are switched to HEAT
when there is a call for heat on one zone it will turn the other damper(s) off. Which is operating as expected.
2. When I set 2nd floor thermosat to OFF position. Zone 1 Thermostat is in HEAT position (assume no call for heat) both zone 1 and zone 2 dampers are in the open position.
When Zone 1 calls for heat, the Zone 2 Aprilaire damper remains open, but
the Zone 2 EWC damper is closed. Why would this occur? My preference
would be to have both remain open, and act as if I had a single zone system for flexibility.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jim,

If there is a demand for heating on Zone 1 and NO demand for heating on Zone 2, both of the Zone 2 dampers should drive close. It sounds as if, like we discussed earlier on the phone, that you either have a wiring issue or your Aprilaire motor on Zone 2 is faulty.

I suggest testing the Aprilaire motor isolated from the Zoning system. To do this, follow the procedure below:

1. Turn all thermostats to the OFF position and wait for the system to shut down.
2. Turn off power to the zone panel.
3. Observe and note the position of the Damper in question. Is it open or is it closed?
4. Change the wiring so it is now connected to M1 and M2.
5. Turn the power back on to the zone panel.
6. Observe and note the response of the damper in question. Did it change position?
7. If the damper was open with power off and closed with power on, it should be wired to M1 and M6.

If the damper was closed with power off and open with power on, it should be wired to M1 and M4.

If you observed no response from the damper, it is defective and should be replaced.

I hope this helps, feel free to contact me if you need further assistance.

Eric
I was wrong. Both dampers that are wired in parallel do open and close correctly.

What I wanted to do was if thermostat is OFF in Zone 2 that the dampers for Zone 2 would remain open and not Close when Zone 1 is calling for heat or cooling. Is there a way to do that without disconnecting Zone 2 dampers?

Thanks
Eric K.

Jim,

If I understand you correctly, you want Zone 2 open 100% of the time. If that is true the easiest way to accomplish that is to simply disconnect the wires for zone 2 from the control panel while the dampers are open. This will keep the Zone 2 open indefinitely. I hope this information helps!

I understand what you are saying but I think there should be more comments regarding the threat that was initially started so that the pool of thoughts is attracted. Regards.
