UT3000 not configuring single stage heat pump

Post by bobp »

I have a UT3000 with 2 UTC dampers and 2 CTK04 thermostats controlling a communicating AMVM97 modulating furnace and non-communicating ASZ16 single stage heat pump.

Furnace is working great, however when the contractor went to configure the heat pump he could not change the settings on UT3000 to Heat Pump System and Dual Fuel System. Heat Pump 'Stats" is selected.

Contractor was able to successfully configure Heat Pump as an A/C on CTK04s and the unit fired up.

In reading the UT3000 tech bulliten it states that for non communicating equipment you need to manually configure the UT3000 (in this case) for the heat pump.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thx

Sir,

Unfortunately, a non-communicating Amana heat pump along with a communicating Amana furnace IS NOT a valid equipment configuration in the "ComfortNet" family of equipment. By wiring the HP in straight cool mode, your contractor was able to get everything to work. A non-communicating AC is a valid configuration.

In defense of the contractor, most are unaware that a non-communicating HP unit is invalid when connected to a communicating furnace or Air Handler. The communicating network does not allow for it and the manufacturer may not have properly trained/informed the Distributor and their Contractors of this little known fact.

This is why trying to "manually" configure the UT3000 for Dual fuel HP system fails, and the processor switches right back to a Heat/Cool system. It's not a valid configuration in non-communicating mode. The same would happen if it was non-zoned with a single CTK04 communicating thermostat.

So, your only recourse it to accept the system as is, or work with the contractor to swap out the Amana 1 stage (non-comm) HP to an Amana 2 stage or inverter communicating HP.

I hope this helps,

Update:

Great HVAC vendor swapped out ASZ16 - non-communicating condenser and replaced with a 2-stage ASZC16 communicating condenser (which requires a 24v transformer to power control module that DOES NOT SHIP with the unit).

We now have a AMVN97 muti-stage furnace, ASZC16 heat pump condenser/CAPF4961 coil being controlled by EWC UT3000, 2 EWC mechanical dampers and 2 CKT04 thermostats connected to wifi.

I now get to play with all the settings and optimize. The heat has been great, house is a little too cold (it's 90 outside) which is OK :)

The rebates alone in Massachusetts justified this configuration above and I think any HVAC vendor could sell a lot of them if they knew what it can do.

Thanks John for all the suggestions via phone. It's great to talk engineer <-> engineer
